Mona Eltahawy is an Egyptian-American journalist who was thrust into the view of the world during the protests that pushed Mubarak from power in 2011. She is a liberal Muslim feminist who is mowing down expectation and oppression with her eloquent words, fearless attitude and determination to bring to light the issues women in the Middle East face.

World Changing Women - Mona Eltahawy 1

Mona is an icon, author, award-winning journalist and so many other amazing things. She is an advocate for a sexual revolution in the Middle East, to change the way sexuality is viewed and to empower women to make their own choices about their bodies without external pressures. Her writing is intense and can be controversial, but she’s an important voice that more people are listening to. She authored the book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution, that contains essays highlighting the painful reality for many women. Mona spotlights the pain and corruption in the world in ways that blend the public image with the intensely personal. While it might be difficult to read or watch, it’s compelling and now is not the time to be looking away.

Mona fights stereotypes of Muslim women and misogyny by sharing her ideas with the world. I will keep following her, keep listening and learning more from this fascinating and incredible woman.
